M-2

M-2 High Speed Tool Steel

M-2 is a high speed tungsten-molybdenum tool steel. The carbides are small and evenly distributed. It has high wear resistance. After heat treatment, its hardness is the same as T-1, but its bending strength can reach 4700 Mpa, and its toughness and thermoplasticity are higher than T-1 by 50%. It is usually used to manufacture a variety of tools, such as drill bits, taps and reamers. Its decarbonization sensitivity is a little bit high.

Forging1975-2075° FSlow.Do not forge below 1700° F. Anneal after forging.
Annealing1550-1600° FCool slowly at a rate of 35° F per hour to 1000° FFor best results, insulating media is desirable. Hold at temperature for 2 hours.
Stress Relieving1100-1300° FCool slowlyStress relieve after rough machining
Preheating1500-1550° FPreheat time in furnace is ¾ Hr. per inch of thickness. Heating up to temperature as slow as possible.
Hardening2225-2275° F (furnace)

2200-2225° F (salt bath)

Quench in air or warm oil. To minimize quenching strains, quench in salt at 1000° FFor maximum wear resistance, harden at 2275° F. For maximum toughness and high hardness, harden at 2200° F.
Tempering(See Chart)Double tempering is required. The usual tempering time is 2+2 hours. Recommended temperature is 1000-1075° F.
