CPM REX 76® Powder Metal
CPM REX 76
® is a super high speed steel made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy Process. It has high carbon, vanadium and cobalt for abrasion resistance comparable to
T15 and superior red hardness. CPM REX 76 is heat treatable to 68/70 HRC. Its high hardness, fine grain size and uniform carbide distribution make it outstanding for special purpose cutting tools beyond the capabilities of the
AISI Type M40 series high speed steels. The best applications are where high red hardness, high abrasion resistance, and good toughness can be used to advantage.

| Forging | 2000-2100° F | Slow cool. | Do not forge below 1700° F. |
| Annealing | 1600° F | Slow cool maximum 30 ° F per hour and then air or furnace cool. | 1600° F and hold 2 hours. Slow cool maximum 30° F per hour to 1000° F, then air or furnace cool. |
| Stress Relieving | 1100-1300° F | Air or furnace cool. | After Machining: Hold for 2 hours.
Hardened Parts: Temper 25° F below original tempering or 1000° F minimum. |
| Preheating | 1500-1550° F | | 1500-1550° F and equalize. Second preheat at 1850-1900° F. |
| Hardening | 2100-2190° F | Salt, oil or atmosphere quench to 1000-1100° F, equalize and then air cool to below 125° F or hand warm. Vacuum or atmosphere quench rate through 1850-1300° F range critical to achieve optimum heat treat response. | Standard recommendation to achieve HRC 67/69 is 2150-2175° F. |
