A-36 is a low carbon hot-rolled steel that is one of the most commonly used steel alloys. It is an excellent choice for tooling plate applications. The A-36 analysis combines a 0.22 to 0.28% carbon content with silicon and manganese to produce a fine quality stress relieved material. A-36 hot roll plate has a 58,000/80,000 (psi) tensile strength and a 36,000 (min psi) yield strength. Compared to 1018 Cold Roll, A-36 has a rougher surface due to the hot rolling process. Though it is more difficult to machine and weld compared to 1018 Cold Roll, A-36 is usually less expensive.
